Don’t Let Numbers Define You

Do you weigh yourself every day? How often do you check your bank account? Do you panic every time you read your annual performance review? Are you always counting on numeric data to determine your next steps? It is easy to reduce ourselves and others into an equation that often times does not tell the whole story.

Here’s a few categories that try to squeeze us into boxes by the numbers.

SAT Scores

Class Rankings

Credit Ratings

Cholesterol Levels

Body Mass Index (BMI)

Height and Weight

Performance Reviews

Teaching Evaluations

Customer Feedback

Sales Numbers

Do these numbers reflect your true personality? Do ratings describe what a great friend you are or that you happen to be a really good listener? Maybe you are an amazing teacher or a talented gardener or a world class chef who just had an off day?

We are made of emotions and thoughts and experiences that cannot be quantified or squeezed into a box.

The quality of your relationships should not be evaluated on a sliding scale.

Whether we are looking at customer reviews, double checking our bank accounts or looking at the numbers on our bathroom scales, every part of life is measured by numbers but we don’t have to let the numeric results define us!

How do we love? How do we create? How do we experience the world around us? Loving ourselves, doing our best and treating others with kindness and respect should be the defining factors.
